Boston Marketing Jobs Growing

Many Boston marketing jobs are on the rise.

In the marketing industry, some fast-growing occupations include marketing, advertising and public relations managers. These workers are responsible for formulating marketing policies and direct sales activities and planning, organizing and directing advertising and public relations activities for departments, entire organizations and individual clients.

According to an article by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, jobs for marketing, advertising and public relations managers should grow faster than average through 2014 as the number of new products and services also continues to grow. The industry currently employs 23,430 employees and that number is expected to increase by 15.7 percent.

To Cut Newspaper Jobs in Boston or Cut Pay?

With the lagging economy dragging down the already-volatile newspaper business, two large papers are taking different approaches on how to handle their jobs in Boston.

In June, the Boston Herald announced it would cut 130 to 160 jobs under a plan to outsource printing operations following a drop in circulation, according to an article by Reuters. Press workers, mailers, engravers and paper handlers are expected to receive the brunt of the cuts.

In September or October 2008, following the cutbacks, a Chicopee, Mass. plant owned by News Corp will print the Herald every day except Friday, at which time the paper will be printed by Boston Offset out of Norwood, Mass. The Herald’s competing newspaper, the Boston Globe, had considered printing the Herald but ultimately decided against it.

Procter & Gamble to Cut 215 Boston Jobs

Bad news for those with jobs in Boston’s Gillette headquarters.

Procter & Gamble Co.
has announced its plans to cut 215 jobs from Gillette’s South Boston headquarters, the first major cut at the world shaving facility, according to an article from The Boston Globe. The company also announced it would shut down a plant in Fort Devens, Mass.

The company, based in Cincinnati, Oh., has been trying to trim jobs since it acquired Gillette in 2005.

Boston IT Jobs Have High Potential

There is one high-tech occupation that currently accounts for a high number of Boston IT jobs, and is only expected to grow.

Network systems and data communications analysts are one of the fastest growing occupations nationwide. Network systems and data communications analysts design, test, and evaluate systems such as local area networks, wide area networks, the Internet, Intranets and other data communication systems. Systems can range from a connection between two offices in the same building to globally distributed networks.

In Boston, according to an article by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, there are currently 8,230 positions for network systems and data communications analysts. There are expected to be 3,540 new jobs and 970 replacement jobs available by 2014, an increase of 43 percent.
