Boston Jobs Are on the Rise

Jobs in Boston and the surrounding area saw a 1 percent increase during August.

According to an article by the Daily News Transcript, employment most likely increased because healthcare and educational facilities continued to hire workers despite the declining economy.

The Office of Labor and Workforce Development released a report stating the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area saw one of the highest annual job growth rate of all the state’s labor market areas, second only to Farmingham. The area saw an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent, lower than the July unemployment rate of 4.8 percent and lower than the national unemployment rate of 6.1 percent.

Boston Accounting Jobs Remain Stable

While the financial activities industry is faltering nationwide, accounting jobs in Boston are continuing to grow.

Accounting is one industry that won’t be hurt by the current recession, according to an article by the Boston Business Journal, because despite what is happening in the economy, businesses always need to maintain tax records. Because of this, competition for accounting jobs in Boston and throughout Massachusetts remains fierce, with many big firms still hiring on a regular basis.

“In terms of hiring, one development that firms are considering is the newly implemented International Financial Reporting Standards,” the article notes. “Although colleges and universities haven’t changed their lesson plans yet and the CPA exam does not yet cover the soon-to-be-standard guidelines, large firms are already holding in-house training sessions and will likely hire experts from overseas.”

Boston Jobs Increase During Five of Last Six Months

More Boston jobs are being added this year than the city saw last year, despite a rising national unemployment rate and declining economy.

The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area has added jobs during five of the last six months, with employment from last year increasing by 1 percent in February, 1 percent in March, .9 percent in April, .8 percent in May, .8 percent in June and .8 percent in July. During July the area saw a total non-farm employment of 2,501,200, slightly lower than June’s employment of 2,529,200, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The area’s unemployment rate also decreased from 5 percent in June to 4.8 percent in July. The state’s unemployment rate decreased from 5.2 percent in June to 5.1 percent in July, and Massachusetts saw a total non-farm employment of 3,292,500, an increase of .4 percent from last year.

Boston Government Jobs Expected to Grow

Government jobs in Boston are expected to grow during the near future.

In July 2008, Boston’s government industry employed 281,500 people, an increase of 1 percent from last year, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Massachusetts‘ government industry is expected to employ 416,380 people by 2014, an increase of 2.1 percent from the 407,700 jobs in 2004, according to an article by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
