Boston Government Jobs Prep through Youth Council

Posted on April 7, 2009

A city initiative could help prepare youths who are thinking about future Boston government jobs.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced that the Mayor’s Youth Council is accepting applications for the 2009-2010 session until April 16th. The Council provides youth with a voice in local government and a chance to address youth issues. Former Council members have gone on to fill leadership roles in government, non-profits and the private sector.

“Serving on the Youth Council is a great way to start actively participating in city government at a young age,” Menino said in a press release. “Members have an opportunity to represent both their neighborhoods and their peers while making a real impact on the issues affecting youth in the city. The Youth Council allows teens to gain leadership experience and help make Boston a better place.”

Students entering their junior or senior year in high school or an alternative program in the fall of 2009 are eligible to serve on the Council. Boston residency also is required and knowledge of youth programs and issues is preferred. Representatives from each neighborhood will be chosen to serve on the Council.

Volunteer members will participate in skill building activities and work closely with Menino, government officials, community leaders and other teens throughout Boston to help develop innovative solutions to youth issues. Youths also will be expected to attend two evening meetings each month at City Hall, participate in Council meetings and have ongoing outreach to peers and youth programs. Youths will be expected to commit about 10 hours per month to the Council.
