Orchestra Adds Jobs in Boston

Major orchestras around the country are publicizing openings, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which is touting ten jobs in Boston.

According to an article from the NYTimes, although unemployment remains high, orchestras are marketing some rare opportunities. Next season the New York Philharmonic will have a rare 12 openings, or roughly 12 percent of its instrumental work force, thanks to a confluence of retirements, departures for better jobs and long-unfilled positions. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has 10 vacancies, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 9, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic 7. (more…)

Boston Scientific to Eliminate Jobs in Boston

Boston Scientific prohibited the media from covering its annual shareholders meeting, which led many to speculate that it was discussing pending layoffs and its need to eliminate more jobs in Boston.

The Natick, Mass.-based medical device maker did not specifically say why it decided to close the meeting, which was held in Boston. It was the company’s first annual meeting since hiring J. Raymond Elliott as president and CEO last July.

Boston Unemployment Dips Slightly

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported that the state unemployment rate, along with Boston’s unemployment rate, fell from 9.5 percent in February to 9.3 percent in March.

Massachusetts remains below the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent. Preliminary job estimates for March count 3,149,200 jobs in Massachusetts with 7,600 new jobs added to the state’s economy, and an increase of 5,700 in the labor force.

Jobs in Massachusetts grew by 7,600 in March after gaining 4,000 jobs (revised up from 1,500) in February. The Private Sector has added 12,700 jobs over the last two months with gains in eight of the sectors.

Employers Expected to Add Boston Jobs

Boston jobs are expected to increase across several industries over the next few months, according to a survey by Manpower Inc., the national staffing agency.

Manpower’s quarterly report found 20 percent of Greater Boston employers expect to increase hiring in the three-month period that begins in April, up from 13 percent in the previous three months, and 12 percent from a year ago. Meanwhile, fewer employers expect to cut jobs in the next quarter - only 7 percent, compared with 13 percent in the previous quarter and 18 percent a year ago.

“Hiring levels in our area appear to be considerably stronger,’’ said Susan Fontana, a Manpower spokeswoman. “Employers are also much more optimistic about hiring activity.’’

Teaching Jobs in Boston Eliminated

A shakeup at several Massachusetts schools today caused the elimination of several teaching jobs in Boston.

According to state officials, staff at six schools will have to reapply for their jobs and five principals will be replaced after the schools were listed among nearly three dozen statewide that will probably be declared “underperforming’’ and subject to drastic change.

Overall, 12 Boston schools face being listed as underperforming, slightly more than a third of the 35 schools statewide. The list includes the Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester, long considered a barometer of Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s effectiveness in improving the city’s schools over the past 16 years.

New Legislation to Create Jobs in Boston

Governor Patrick of Massachusetts recently filed legislation that will help many small businesses create jobs in Boston.

In a nutshell, the legislation will help small businesses hire new workers and reduce the cost of doing business for small businesses.

Recently, leaders in the Massachusetts area have come together to enact measures that will spur on job creation.

Due to these measures, business growth and job creation measures are predicted to create or retain 20,000 jobs, and save small businesses upwards of $400 million.

Liberty Mutual Adds Insurance Jobs in Boston

Liberty Mutual, a home, life, and auto insurance company, has announced that they will be expanding their headquarters and adding 1,100 new insurance jobs in Boston (click here).

The company known for their endearing commercials about paying it forward planned the expansion with Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

According to Property-Casualty.com, if local government authority approvals are secured, the project would get a tax break of more than $15 million and bring much-needed jobs to Boston.

The mayor’s announcement said the project will add 600 new full-time positions with the company and the work on a property it purchased will mean 500 construction jobs.

Leaders Pledge to Create Jobs in Boston

With the total number of jobs in Boston diminishing, Massachusetts leaders have banded together to think of ways the state can generate new jobs.

Unemployment in Boston has risen dramatically, creating the need for new and innovative ways to spur on job creation.

According to NECN.com, state Senate President Therese Murray is taking aim at state authorities and public agencies involved in economic development and trade and tourism, pushing to weed the poor ones out or consolidate them into better focused agencies.

“We need to bring some reality back. We started looking at it last March,'’ Murray said in an interview at her State House office Monday, “and found out there are 31 different agencies, ‘quasi’s,’ and authorities that have economic development in their mission.'’

Boston Unemployment Increases

The Boston unemployment rate increased during July as the city and surrounding area began to lose jobs.

While the majority of the country has been losing jobs since the beginning of the economic recession, Boston was previously one of the few cities that continued adding workers and maintaining a semi-stable unemployment rate. However, the latest data from the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics found that trend changed two months ago.

During July, the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area saw its unemployment rate increase from 8.3 percent to 8.4 percent, which is lower than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent. This follows an unemployment increase from 7.2 percent to 7.5 percent during May.

More Boston Jobs Created by Stimulus

More jobs in Boston (Click here) will soon be created by funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The City of Boston recently announced that it has received $720,000 in federal funding to help clean and redevelop contaminated sites in Dorchester and Roxbury. Of that money, at least $30 million will be used for public housing, and several construction jobs will be created in the process.

Officials say that so far the stimulus has done its part to help save hundreds of jobs and provide the local economy with hundreds of millions of dollars.
