More Boston Jobs Created by Stimulus

Posted on August 26, 2009

More jobs in Boston (Click here) will soon be created by funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The City of Boston recently announced that it has received $720,000 in federal funding to help clean and redevelop contaminated sites in Dorchester and Roxbury. Of that money, at least $30 million will be used for public housing, and several construction jobs will be created in the process.

Officials say that so far the stimulus has done its part to help save hundreds of jobs and provide the local economy with hundreds of millions of dollars.

According to an article by the The Boston Globe, the city has received $172.6 million in federal funds during the last six months, which in turn has helped support 41 construction and work-training projects. The city also has used the funding to leverage an additional $162.2 million in matching state and private grants, making for a total investment of $334.8 million.

“You see a lot of public opinion on the recovery act, whether it’s working, but we’re six months in, and we know we’ve saved jobs,’’ Jake Sullivan, coordinator of the city’s stimulus funds, said in the article. “We know we have programs starting, because of the recovery act.’’

Boston has used stimulus funding to save or create 100 police officer jobs; 231 positions with Boston Public Schools, including 180 teaching jobs; 850 youth jobs with the city’s summer program; and work training has been given to 232 adults. A total of almost 10,000 jobs have been created, and the city still has funding for this winter and next summer.
